Automating live resin filling is one of the most difficult processes in vaporizer cartridge filling.  Not only is the resin notoriously temperature and oxygen-sensitive, but the filling process is also often a point of failure due to the wide range of equipment the resin makes contact with. During filling, live resin is subject to conditions that need to be controlled perfectly–including heat exposure, aggressive agitation, and oxygen–all of which can degrade terpenes and distort flavor by creating unwanted side reactions. This article will cover the difficulties of handling live resin and also the solutions developed by Xylem to address these difficulties head-on.

 

Background

Live resin concentrate is a fresh extract that captures the flavors and aromas of the living plant from freshly harvested material that is frozen upon harvest; then harvested material is extracted with solvents (typically butane and sometimes DME) at cryogenic temperatures. In the cryogenic extraction process, live resin does not go through drying and curing phases to avoid any modifications to terpene flavor and aroma.  This process extracts bioflavonoids and other non-polar / semi-nonpolar compounds from the plant.

Damages

High Temperature

Live resin is a raw plant extract. Its properties are similar to the raw pressed juices that you can purchase by bottle in most grocery stores. Like raw pressed juice, live resin is highly temperature sensitive. Slightly elevated temperatures will “cook” the resin. Typical extracts are held at 70°C but for live resin, the max temperature is 45°-55°C, and it can only stay there for a few hours before it gets cooked.  To understand this process, you can look up sous vide cooking carts to get an understanding of material denaturing – most materials start to denature at 50°C.

Mixing Process

Mixing of distillate and live resin terpene layer to a vaporizer final formulation should be a gentle process. Any use ofshear homogenizers or ultrasonic mixers will initiate localized chemical reactions and denature terpenes.  Heat plates will also damage live resins due to the localized nature of heating.  The only safe method to mix live resin is in a water bath or lab warming oven that is temperature controlled to 50°C.

Oxygen / UV (Oxidizers)

Any oxidizer will impact the live resin flavor.  Preferably live resin is stored in air-tight containers in a fridge. This will prevent both oxygen, water, and light from degrading the terpenes and keep them tasting and smelling fresh for years. Exposure by leaving resin out in the open will cause oxidation and light terpenes will evaporate changing the verynature of the live resin and damaging the taste.

Automated Solution

How can the Xylem dispense live resin safely?

The Xylem system utilized pneumatic ceramic pumps meaning that in addition to mechanical force, extracts are “moved” by pressure – this avoids heating extracts to higher temperatures to induce flow.
