Cannabis Terminology

A

Adapters

Attachments for dab rigs and bongs. Adaptors are usually made of glass and can be used to absorb heat, collect ashes, or catch concentrate to prevent it from seeping into the water chamber of a bong. Adapters help two separate parts of a smoking device to fit together. Standard adapter joints come in a variety of sizes and the ends can be either female or male.

Image

Anther

An anther is an oval-shaped projection at the end of the stamen in a male flower, and it produces, stores, and distributes pollen. There are male and female cannabis plants, unlike other plant species. While the female plant produces flowers with a high THC content, the male produces pollen-filled anthers. Cannabis plants that are hermaphrodites have both flowers and anthers.

April 20

April 20th, commonly referred to as "4/20," is an informal holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts around the world. It's a day dedicated to the consumption and appreciation of marijuana. The origins of 4/20 are somewhat debated, but it's believed to have started in the 1970s among a group of high school students in California who would meet at 4:20 p.m. to smoke weed. Since then, it has grown into a global cultural phenomenon, with events, festivals, and gatherings centered around cannabis taking place on April 20th each year.

Argon

Argon gas (Ar) is a reliable option for storing raw cannabis in vessels to prevent oxidation. This is because Ar is denser than air and it sinks below it and creates a gas layer between the air above and the cannabis flower. Argon does not react with oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide because it is an inert gas. It is also is affordable, accessible. Adding Ar to cannabis is a simple process that does not require any special tools like pressured systems or active gas monitoring.

Ash Catcher

One type of adapter is an ash catcher. Its purpose is to keep bong ashes out of the water. A bong's smoke is easier to inhale while using an ash catcher because it is cleaner and colder. The components of an ash catcher are a diffuser, a chamber, a joint, and a bowl. This kind of adapter resembles a miniature bong inside a larger bong.

Image

Ash Tray

A smaller, sometimes ornamental dish or receptacle where people deposit ash and roaches from joints, blunts. or cigarettes.

Image

Atomizer

The component of a vape pen that heats the cannabis oil and produces the vapor that is inhaled is called the atomizer. Atomizers are often composed of quartz or ceramic, and consist of three elements: 1) a heating surface, 2) a reservoir for oil or concentrate, and 3) a wick for moving the liquid from point A to point B.

Image

B

Back of House (BOH)

An area in dispensaries that is not visible to consumers is referred to as the "back of house" (BOH). In addition to being the primary location for inventory managers to work, it is also where inventory is transferred, audited, and kept. A secure area is usually necessary for inventory audits in most marketplaces. BOH commonly has offices, a staff-only bathroom and break room, safe cash storage, and storage for non-cannabis items.

Baked

When someone refers to themselves as "baked," it indicates that they are high on cannabis. This popular phrase is very frequently used to describe the drowsy sensation connected to specific strains. If you feel heavy, exhausted, hungry, or euphoric after using marijuana, you are considered baked.

Banger

An attachment, or adapter, for a dab rig or bong used for vaporizing concentrate marijuana. Bangers can be made out of glass, ceramics, quartz, or titanium depending on how heat tolerant the the attachment needs to be. The banger attachment is shaped like a bucket can be heated using a torch or an electronic device.

Image

Batter / Badder

Batter, also called “badder”, is a cannabis concentrate named for its malleable consistency that resembles frosting or a thick cake batter.

Image

Image

Blunt

Cannabis that is rolled, wrapped, or stuffed into a paper made of tobacco. Blunts can be rolled from cigars emptied of tobacco or from blunt wraps, which are large, thick rolling papers made of tobacco. Blunts are usually bigger than joints, and hold one to three grams of cannabis.

Image

Blunt Wrap

Is a type of wrapping paper for cannabis. Blunt wrap is made from either flavored or traditional tobacco leaves. Usually, there is an inner layer and the outermost layer is thicker.

Bong

A vertical water pipe is called a bong. Bongs have three main parts: a bowl for flower, a water-filled base to filter the smoke, and a down-stem that joins the bong and bowl for the filtering. Bongs produce a smoother, lighter hit than pipes because the water cools the smoke and filters out contaminants.

Image

Bowl

The circular area that holds flower, is heated, and detached from a bong while smoking. Bowls can be cleaned easily. They are commonly made of glass, wood, or ceramic. Because the bong's bowl is removed for smoking, it is occasionally referred to as a slide.

Image

Bubble Hash

Is an ice-water-made hash (compacted cannabis resin). To make bubble hash, cannabis flowers are shaken in bags containing ice water. The blooms exude resin through the freezing process. Its name, bubble hash, comes from the way it fizzes when smoked.

Bubbler

A portable pipe that resembles a small bong. Bubblers have a mouthpiece, a stem, and a water chamber at the bottom that chills the smoke before it is inhaled. Most are composed of glass, but others can be made of silicone.

Image

Bud

Butane Hash Oil (BHO)

Butane hash oil, or BHO for short, is a specific type of cannabis concentrate made using the chemical solvent butane.

Image

C

Cake

Can be used as another term to call cannabis or refers to a specific strain of indica-dominant hybrid bud that comes in different varieties such as Wedding Cake, Birthday Cake, etc.

Calyx

The calyx is where a flower initially begins to form. It is composed of sepals, which are tiny leaves that shield the flower at its base, and a swathe of small leaves that form close to where the flower joins the stem.

Cannabidiol

A phytocannabinoid derived from Cannabis species, which is devoid of psychoactive activity, with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic and chemopreventive activities.

Cannabinoid

Compounds in the cannabis plant, such as THC and CBD, which have the ability to interact with cannabinoids receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Cannabis Enthusiast

Cannabis Enthusiast is the correct term for anyone who uses marijuana. replaces derogatory terms like "stoner," "pot head," "druggie," "burnout."

Cannon

A joint, often known as a cannabis cigarette, is marketed under the term "cannon." A cannon is specifically defined as a larger, more cylindrical joint, like the broad, long form of a cannon. Since at least the mid-2010s, smokers on the West Coast and in Canada have referred to a fat, cylindrical joint as a "cannon" rather than a cone joint. Legal dispensaries and conventional market brands both carry Cannons. A "hash hole" or "donut" joint is produced by combining a cannon with a hash rosin "worm" in the center. Smokers like cannons because they have enormous impacts and a stronger, more authentic taste. The larger diameter of a cannon can produce a more aerated hit that resembles a bong hit.

Capsule

One of the simplest ways to give cannabis is through capsules. It's simple for those who don't like smoking or don't like the flavor of cannabis edibles to profit from the marijuana plant by taking a tablet. Only THC or CBD, decarboxylated flower, or various cannabis extracts may be found in capsule form.

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is the gas that the majority of plants breathe. So it makes sense that CO2 increases cannabis growth. CO2 is crucial in driving growth rates, increasing biomass, and boosting yields.

Carding

Carding is the technique of sorting dried cannabis flowers for trichomes using a card. To separate the trichomes (high cannabinoid-content glands) and eliminate extra material, the flowers are dragged through screens using a plastic card. Carding can also mean that marijuana shops verify your identification before letting you buy legal marijuana.

Cartridge / Cart

A pre-filled tank of cannabis concentrate designed to work in a vape system. Cartridges, or “carts,” also incorporate a heating element, which vaporizes the oil. Most cartridges screw onto a battery with 510 thread but some have unique fittings. Cartridges usually come in a half-gram or full gram of cannabis oil.

Image

Cannabichromenic Acid (CBCA)

Cannabichromenic acid (CBCA) is a significant cannabinoid and particularly prevalent in tropical cannabis strains. This non-psychotropic component is converted into CBD when it undergoes decarboxylation (when cannabis is cooked) or aging (as plants get older).

Image

Cannabichromevarin (CBCV)

A non-psychoactive cannabinoid related to CBC, cannabichromevarin (CBCV) was discovered in the 1970s by Japanese scientists. It is thought to work similarly to cannabichromene (CBC) in our endocannabinoid system, despite minimal research on the possible advantages of CBCV.

Image

Cannabichromevarinic Acid (CBCVA)

Among the cannabis classes with the least amount of research on them is Cannabichromevarinic Acid, or CBCVA. It is produced from CBGVA and is a homolog of CBC's carboxyl short-chain acid. There is hardly any CBCVA concentration in cannabis flower. When cannabis is cooked, its carboxylated form, or CBCVA, changes into CBCV.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating compound produced by the cannabis plant that is popularly used for a variety of medical applications including pain, anxiety, and seizures.

Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)

The molecular precursor of the well-known cannabinoid CBD (Cannabidiol) is called CBDA, or cannabidiolic acid. It is found in the flowers of female cannabis plants and undergoes a process called decarboxylation to transform into CBD. When a plant is exposed to sunshine or another heat source, this occurs. The term "decarboxylation" describes the molecular sequence of the substance losing one oxygen and two carbon atoms.

Chronic

Some cannabis users save the term "chronic" for extremely strong strains of the plant, and others use it as a term for marijuana itself.

Crumble

An extremely flaky cannabis concentrate. Crumble can also be referred to as honeycomb wax. With THC levels that can exceed 90%, this strong extract is prized for its potency. Hues of crumble span from pale brown to yellow to bright orange. It is powdery and dry, and can be used in blunts, joints, pipes, vapes.

Image

Crutch

A crutch, also called a filter or a nib, is a folded piece positioned at the tip of a joint that comes into contact with your mouth. Crutches prevent cannabis from falling out of the back of a joint. A crutch also stops resin from clogging a joint's end. Crutches can be made of specialized filter paper, cardstock, cardboard, or other weighted paper products. It also prevents the end from becoming soggy and maintains the joint's form.

Image

Cultivar

Cultivar is short for "cultivated variety", which consists of cannabis plants that have been selected or bred for specific traits, characteristics, or qualities though human selection.

D

Dab

An expression used to describe a particular kind of cannabis concentrate that is smoked with a dab rig. Dab has a very high THC content and is often referred to as wax, budder, or amber. In certain contexts, the term "dab" refers exclusively to Butane Hash Oil (BHO), a kind of concentrate made from cannabis plants using butane.

Image

Dab Mat

To catch drip-off in a dab rig, use a dab mat or dab pad. Dab mats are used beneath rigs to shield smooth surfaces from waxy buildup and to provide cushioning to shield rigs from scratches. Additionally, some use them to store the dabber when not in use.

Dab Nail

The component of a dab rig used to evaporate cannabis concentrate is called a dab nail. A dab nail can take on various forms, whereas a banger is always associated with a dish-shaped attachment. While a nail isn't necessarily a banger, a banger is always a nail. A blow torch or an e-nail must be used to heat dab nails to the required (very high) temperatures. Dab nails can be composed of glass, quartz, ceramic, or titanium.

Image

Dabber

A steel or glass instrument for working with cannabis concentrates before dabbing. Concentrates are applied to dabbers' scorching nails using dabbers in a safe manner. While some have flattened ends, others have sharp spikes. Different dabber shapes are necessary for different concentrate textures.

Image

Dabbing

Dabbing is a method of consuming cannabis that involves flash vaporizing an extract—called a “dab”—on a hot surface and inhaling the vapor through a pipe.

Image

Dank

Dank cannabis is what's meant to be described as such. It alludes to 'marijuana' with a strong scent and a high THC content. The word "dank" is frequently used to characterize fragrant, high-quality cannabis. In this context, the term "dank" describes the strong smell of cannabis and denotes a high-quality, moist strain.

Decarboxylation (Decarbing

THC and other chemicals are activated through the process of decarboxylation, also known as decarb or decaring. Cannabis is heated to achieve it. Cannabis usually includes considerable levels of THCA, a non-psychoactive version of THC, prior to decarboxylation. Smoking or vaping cannabis heats it up, which converts the chemical THCA to THC.

Decriminalization

Decriminalization is the term used to describe cannabis regulations that do not impose jail time or criminal records for small-scale marijuana possession. Cannabis use is no longer illegal in several US states. Possession of marijuana is regarded as a minor civil offense in countries where this kind of regulation has been put into place. For the most part, first-time small-scale personal marijuana possession carries no criminal record, no jail term, and no arrest due to the decriminalization of cannabis offenses. The states that have decriminalized cannabis are shown below.

Deli-Style

Budtenders that follow the "deli-style" dispensary workflow hand flower in a jar to patients or customers and weigh it in front of them. The product is normally off limits to them to touch, but they are free to gaze at it and smell it. There are benefits and drawbacks to selling deli style. Although it adds extra work for the personnel, customers like the transparency. Slowing down the checkout process, labeling containers in-store, spills by mistake, and overweighing are additional concerns.

Diamonds

Under specific temperature and pressure settings, crystalline solids known as cannabis diamonds can form in certain cannabis isolates. Compounds such as THCA can separate from liquid cannabis concentrates in the correct conditions to create high-purity diamonds, which can be expensive and labor-intensive to produce. You can vape or smoke this kind of concentration. THC content in diamonds ranges from 70% to 95% on average. Cannabis isolate with such a high degree of purity that cannabinoids form a crystalline solid, like a diamond. Cannabis diamonds are usually made from concentrated THCA or CBD.

Diesel

Mexican Sativa and Afghani strains were crossbred to create the cannabis strain Diesel. Diesel contains high percentages of THC with a terpene profile that produces a fragrance similar to diesel fuel. Many hybrid strains have been made using this highly valued psychoactive strain, such as NYC Diesel and Sour Diesel, which is described as “an invigorating and uplifting sativa-dominant strain with an unmistakable pungent-diesel aroma.”

Dime Bag

A dime bag is the smallest measurement for cannabis. Because it is such a small amount, the majority of dispensaries have been able to avoid selling dime bags. The term "dime bag" refers to a half-gram of marijuana.

Dispensary / Dispo

Dispensaries are licensees in the cannabis industry who dispense products to patients and customers.

Distillate

A viscous, golden liquid created by refining cannabis resin. Distillation allows the processor to isolate a desired compound from the cannabis plant and remove any undesirable plant material.

Distilling

The system is so intricate that scientists are only now starting to grasp its functioning. [Reference]

Entourage Effect

The term "entourage effect" describes how some terpenes and cannabinoids work better when other terpenes and cannabinoids are around. For instance, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD might be strengthened in the presence of specific terpenes. The most potent medical cannabis medicines are believed to be full-spectrum products rather than isolates because to the entourage effect. As an example, full-spectrum CBD has been connected to an astounding array of health advantages. Studies have indicated that specific THC concentrations may augment some of the advantageous effects of CBD, despite the fact that some people desire all the benefits of CBD without the euphoric symptoms of THC.

E-rig

Extraction

Processes that aim to remove oil or resin from cannabis plant material to make a concentrate product. Extraction methods can use solvents such as butane, protane, or CO2 in a closed-loop system to produce BHO, PHO, or CO2 extracts, or can use heat and pressure to remove oils, as in making rosins or hash.

F

Female Cannabis Plant

Male and female marijuana plants exist. This only applies to dioecious plants, such as cannabis; it does not apply to other plants. While the male marijuana plant produces seeds, the female plant yields flowers. When a male plant is present, pollination will occur, resulting in unfavorable buds on female plants. Certain marijuana plants possess both male and female reproductive parts, making them hermaphrodites.
